Making hospitals’ HVAC systems energy efficient

 

Daikin has supplied air-cooled single screw chillers for a new 13 stories hospital in Saudi Arabia. The 6 chiller units by Daikin will be providing chilled water to the 40 Air Handling Units intalled to distribute the necessary cooling to all the environments in the hospital, surgery rooms and labs included.

The project, the challenges, and the solutions

For this project, the main need was having an energy efficient HVAC system. So, chillers were required to be extremely efficient. That is a why the premium efficiency version of these chillers was chosen for the project, so the hospital’s system could meet the cooling needs of the building while keeping the power input of the chillers low. That was very important, as other manufacturers require higher power inputs to provide the same cooling capacity.

Another reason for choosing Daikin, was reliability. The chillers, needed to be installed on the rooftop of a building directly hit by the sunlight, while operating at temperatures between 46° and 52° C. All that, clearly creates conditions that might be hard to stand for chillers, but since Daikin has an impressive track record in projects of this kind, the customers had absolute trust in the brand.

The reliability aspect was very important also because the chillers are supposed to provide cooling for technical equipment such as MRI or CT scan machines. So, having a reliable solution was fundamental to ensure both the comfort and the process cooling needs of the hospital is supposed to meet.

In fact, Daikin has a history of leadership in the field of single screw compressor chillers, which have been installed all over the world for 20 years.

Daikin screw compressor, besides being well-knows for efficiency, offers great reliability. Differently from a standard screw compressor, it uses one main screw meshing with twin star rotors to produce volume matching compression cycle. Due to the main rotor, balanced in both radial and axial direction, the compressor bearing has extremely high reliability. Therefore, its life span can be longer than other screw compressors. The single screw compressor, then, has only three moving parts. As a result of that, it reduces the possibility of failure and keeps operation costs low.
